Why Is My AC Running All Day and Still Not Cooling?

When the summer heat hits Southeast Georgia, your air conditioner works harder than any other appliance in your home. But if it seems like your AC is running nonstop and your house still feels warm, something isn’t right.

While it’s normal for your system to run longer during extremely hot afternoons, it shouldn’t struggle to keep your home comfortable day after day. If your thermostat never seems to reach the temperature you’ve set, there are several common issues that could be to blame.

  1. Your Air Filter Is Dirty

A clogged air filter is one of the most common (and easiest to fix) reasons your air conditioner isn’t cooling efficiently.

When airflow is restricted, your HVAC system has to work much harder to circulate cool air throughout your home. This can lead to longer run times, higher energy bills, and unnecessary wear on your equipment.

Tip: Check your air filter every month during peak cooling season. Most homeowners should replace it every one to three months, depending on pets, allergies, dust, and the size of your home.

  1. Your Thermostat Settings Need Attention

Before assuming your AC has a major problem, make sure your thermostat is set correctly.

Check that:

  • It’s set to Cool instead of Fan
  • The temperature is lower than the current room temperature
  • The batteries (if applicable) are fresh
  • Nothing is causing false temperature readings like direct sunlight or curtains blocking airflow around it

Sometimes a simple thermostat adjustment is all it takes to get your system back on track.

  1. Your Outdoor Unit Is Dirty

Your outdoor condenser unit releases heat from your home. If it’s covered with dirt, grass clippings, leaves, or other debris, it can’t efficiently remove that heat. Without proper airflow around the unit, your air conditioner has to run longer to achieve the same cooling results.

Keep at least two feet of clearance around your outdoor unit by trimming vegetation and removing debris regularly. You can also gently rinse your outdoor unit with a garden hose (never a pressure washer) after turning the power off first.   1. Low Refrigerant Levels

Refrigerant is what allows your air conditioner to absorb heat from inside your home. If there’s a leak, your system can’t cool effectively.

Signs of low refrigerant may include:

  • Warm air coming from your vents
  • Ice forming on the indoor or outdoor unit
  • Longer cooling cycles
  • Higher electric bills

Because refrigerant issues require specialized equipment and certification, this is a repair best left to an HVAC professional.

  1. Frozen Evaporator Coils

It may seem strange, but your air conditioner can actually freeze during the hottest days of summer.

Frozen coils are often caused by:

  • Dirty air filters
  • Restricted airflow
  • Refrigerant problems

When the coils freeze, your AC can’t properly cool your home. If you notice ice on the indoor unit or refrigerant lines, turn the system off and call an HVAC professional, like Air Concepts, for service.

  1. Air Leaks Around Your Home

Even a perfectly functioning air conditioner will struggle if cool air is escaping.

Check for leaks around:

  • Windows
  • Exterior doors
  • Attic access points
  • Ductwork

Sealing even the smallest leaks can improve comfort while reducing the amount of time your AC needs to run.

  1. Your Air Conditioner May Be Undersized or Aging

If your system has always struggled during our hot and humid Georgia summers, it may not be the right size for your home. Older systems also lose efficiency over time, making it harder to keep up with demand.

If your air conditioner is over 10 years old and requires frequent repairs, it may be time to consider a replacement. A newer, properly sized system can cool your home more effectively while using less energy and saving you money in the long run.

When Is It Time to Call a Professional?

While changing an air filter or clearing debris around your outdoor unit are simple maintenance tasks, some problems require expert help. Call a professional if your AC runs constantly but never reaches the thermostat setting, you’re getting warm air from the vents, you notice ice on the unit or refrigerant lines, your energy bills have increased unexpectedly, or your system is making unusual noises or producing strange odors.
